About Caervallack
This is our 31st year at Caervallack and we’ve been ruthlessly ‘removing bits that no longer work’ – hedges and plants that have outgrown their welcome, topiary that no longer contributes .
Its a mature garden around a listed farmhouse : there is an ancient well, an orchard , and a Japanese informed Courtyard of rocks, topiary and green leaves. The principle garden is East facing , a series of surprising rooms and spaces divided by hedges and contemporary cob walls. Figurative sculpture gives you destinations to walk to and concrete ponds and benches allow for meditative reflection.
Painter Louise McClary chooses the plants for colour and form; Architect Matt does the hard landscaping, walls, topiary and compost. We both weed and trust each other’s opinion, most of the time. Our design skills are then necessarily supplemented by Craft gardener Nick Chandler and his team once a month .
We spend our years trying to finish projects that have already been started – the National Garden Scheme is helping us achieve this goal!
It is very nourishing to see the garden through visitors eyes.
