About Foxglove Cottage
Tucked behind an 18th century cottage (not open), in a suburban Horsham street, is this unusual ¼ acre plantaholic’s garden packed full of colourful perennials and more, a haven for birds, bees and butterflies.
No lawn remains, instead gravel and bark paths interspersed by planting areas encompass both sun drenched borders and shadier areas. A south facing border is planted with perennials, roses and clematis in shades of pink, wine and purple early in the season, the colours becoming hotter as the season progresses. A white flower bed offers a cooler zone. The raised central bed relies mainly on foliage colour and texture for interest with colourful containers to spice things up.
The beach inspired summerhouse opens onto an area of decking, with more containers planted in clashing colours influenced by Great Dixter, flanking this is a water feature in a pebble circle and two additional small ponds add more watery elements to the space, encouraging wildlife in abundance.
The end of the garden has been transformed into a gravel garden for drought tolerant plants with a large, rusty metal arbour and more seating. A nursery area grows a large selection of perennial plants that are for sale, as are jam and chutneys made from produce grown in the garden.
The garden is sprinkled with quirky vintage finds and gardenalia, along with a plethora of planted containers. Plenty of seating areas in both sun and shade where you can rest, enjoy the surroundings, and indulge in some home-made cake served in vintage china. Members of the Hardy Plant Society.
