About Grange over Sands Hidden Gardens
Elder Cottage garden is in a sheltered hollow between Cart Lane and the coastal railway line. It is planted with mostly herbaceous, and some shrubby perennials, with an extended season in mind. There is also a small fruit and vegetable garden, and larger apple and pear trees dotted among the flowers. Bruno Gouillon & Andrew Fairey
21 Cart Lane. Eighteen years ago this garden was a long-neglected tennis court, with a strawberry bed at one end, and overgrown with brambles. Its shape was a long rectangle, which I felt needed to be broken up. I created a series of rooms which would provide an element of surprise, and I also wanted to grow some of my own fruit and vegetables in raised beds.
I planted a number of trees and had a wall built to separate the veg patch from the rest of the garden. Several seating areas provide perfect views of the garden, taking advantage of the light at different times of day. I introduced a more formal element round the gravel walk and bird bath, and the main flower beds are near the house, with a patio for al fresco eating.
There are quite a few differing climatic situations in the garden, and the challenge has been to find the right plants for the right area. Veronica Cameron
Hawthorne Cottage is a Grade2 listed cottage, we moved two years ago from Hereford, we have spend this time replacing and redesigning the garden with mixed planting with wonderful displays of roses, Camellias, Hydrangeas, Wisteria and annuals for all year around interests. John and Carole Ashton
Shrublands is ¾ acre garden situated on a hillside overlooking Morecambe Bay. Tended by owners for 18 months, it is a work in progress. The focus has been on tending to trees, reinstating a lawn and redeveloping beds. There are plans to build a garage with living roof and overall to create a maintainable garden of shrubs with mature trees, meandering paths and seating areas to take in the stunning views.
