About Horatio's Garden Cardiff
Horatio’s Garden nurtures the wellbeing of people affected by spinal injury in beautiful, accessible gardens within NHS spinal injury centres. We work with leading garden designers to create our gardens which are maintained by the charity’s team and volunteers. We run garden therapy sessions, have a thriving arts programme as well as live music and seasonal events.
The charity’s vision is to create thriving communities and gardens in all 11 NHS spinal injury centres in the UK. To date we have opened 7 gardens and we will be opening our 8th garden in Sheffield soon.
Horatio’s Garden is named after Horatio Chapple, a schoolboy who wanted to be a doctor and who volunteered at The Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre in Salisbury. It was Horatio’s idea to create a garden and his original research continues to shape each garden’s design and the charity’s aims. Tragically, Horatio’s life was cut short at 17. His vibrant legacy has continued to grow, daily improving the lives of people affected by spinal injury across the UK.
Horatio’s Garden Wales opened in May 2022, designed by two-time RHS Chelsea Gold Medal winner, Sarah Price. The garden is part of The Welsh Spinal Cord Injury and Neuro Rehabilitation Centre at University Hospital Llandough in Cardiff. The spinal and neuro centres admit patients from across south and mid-Wales, as well as Gloucestershire.
It is a calm, inspiring garden to be enjoyed throughout the seasons. The planting scheme is a haven of soft colour with light grasses, roses with gorgeous scents, and trees with stunning autumn colour. There are smooth paths that enable safe movement around the garden for patients in hospital beds and wheelchairs. A garden pavilion, for warmth, shelter and socialising, and a greenhouse where we have horticultural therapy sessions.
