About Lewis Cottage
At the bottom of a winding unmade Devon farm track lies Lewis Cottage. Buried in the glorious Mid Devon countryside, surrounded by 4 acres of wild, informal but beautiful gardens & woods, Lewis Cottage is a hidden gem of a garden, a wonderful combination of relaxed planting schemes & formal borders, with woodland areas dedicated to attracting wildlife. It’s winding walkways, woods & interesting selection of unusual trees & plants, make it a garden rich in variety.. Built in the 16th century by French Huguenot refugees, the current owners took over an established but overgrown 1 acre woodland garden that has expanded over the last 30 years to its current size. Working mostly on heavy clay, the garden displays a large range of plants that can be grown in these conditions in both sun & shade.
The garden featured on BBC Gardeners World in 2017 & West Country TV in 2015. Several editorials in Devon Life, an article in The RHS Garden magazine & Country Life & an extended feature in Country Living May 2019 as well as many appearances on Radio Devon. We are delighted to be opening the garden once again after stepping back for a couple of years & to be included in the Yellow book & look forward to welcoming both new and regular visitors in 2026 to see the garden being restored.
