About Little Court
This garden is 3 acres including the meadow. Snowdrops, and later in February thousands of scented Crocus tommasinianus make a lavender carpet under the Victorian apple trees, giving an unforgettable spectacle. These are followed by Narcissus ‘White Lady’, then snake’s head fritillary, finally scarlet Tulipa sprengeri in late May.
In spring and summer there is a collection of perennial geraniums, and many chalk loving herbaceous plants, climbers on the walls and an immaculate lawn.
There are seven contrasting sections of the garden, divided by ancient flint walls. Grass paths link the different parts.
The ‘goose garden’ has close mown paths with a mass of naturalised cowslips, primroses and other English wild flowers. There is a traditional walled kitchen garden with grass paths, vegetables and fruit, flowers for picking. Beyond two gates, the wildflower meadow has many butterflies, and secret seats. There is an unspoilt view to the South and East Hampshire.
The garden appeals to all ages. It is a favourite with photographers, having appeared in many magazines and books; it was featured in the RHS The Garden magazine and Country Life among others.
It is fun for children, with swings and wildlife to find, and an I-Spy quiz.
Visitors love the peaceful tranquility of the garden which has been open for NGS since 1984.
