About Llys Euryn Cottage

Llys Euryn Cottage has a 1+ acre garden set in woodland on Bryn Euryn hill with views over Colwyn Bay towards the sea. The garden is split into two parts, an inner walled area, which is a mixture of small trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials. Hostas are a speciality with more than 70 varieties grown. South facing terraces are planted with drought tolerant plants.
The outer garden has a vegetable area with raised beds and soft fruit. There are further shrub and herbaceous perennial borders. Greenhouses are mainly used for propagation and tomatoes. The grassy steep slope overlooking the house has been planted with a variety of unusual small trees and shrubs.

The whole of Bryn Euryn hill is now a CCBC nature reserve with the grassland areas designated as a SSSI. The hill, originally just a bare grazing area, has not been grazed since WWII, resulting in the gradual encroachment of the wood and shrub areas, with the council trying to contain the latter. The soils which are alkaline (Bryn Euryn is part of the North Wales Carboniferous Limestone area) are locally sufficiently acidic to grow the more tolerant rhododendrons and camellias in the areas adjacent to the surrounding woodland.
