The Hospital of St Cross

The Medieval Hospital of St Cross nestles in water meadows beside the River Itchen and is one of England's oldest almshouses. The tranquil, walled 'Compton Garden', created in the late C17 by Bishop Compton, contains beautiful sculptural herbaceous borders, old-fashioned roses, and magnificent trees, along with a large carp and lily pond.

About The Hospital of St Cross

The Compton Garden is named after the celebrated botanist and horticulturalist Bishop Henry Compton who, as Master of St Cross in the late 17th century, cultivated an inspired garden here, using his New World species. We are still using a number of these select species; such as, Cynara cardunculus ‘the Cardoon Thistle’ and the Rudbeckia Laciniata ‘Cut Leaved Cone Flower’ to name a few.

The Masters Garden is a beautifully laid out quadrangle of wall, yew, and sumptuous lawn that lies in parallel to the Compton Garden. Championing a majestic London Plane that holds full court by the carp & lily pond, as well as beautiful herbaceous borders along the two parts of the quad.

The gardens present as a stunning design of textures, hues, sizes, and species, that produce flowering interest throughout the year. Resulting in a much loved peaceful set of gardens that face out to our pretty water meadows; with the majestic St Catherine’s Hill rising in the distance. Bishop Compton left St Cross after 12 years as Master, to become Bishop of London, from 1675 – 1713,. There he developed the famous Fulham Palace gardens; which featured thousands of exotic plants from his botanical discoveries.

The Compton Garden design at The Hospital of St Cross underwent an inspiring update in 2023 and extended the borders, and, added numerous species to create a full seasonal Mexican wave of interest.
