The Old Vicarage

Glorious garden with mixed flowering borders and mature trees in gentle valley with fantastic views to Black Rocks. All-season interest. Acid loving plants such as camellias and rhododendrons are grown in pots in courtyard garden. Tender ferns and exotic plants grown in fernery. Beyond is the orchard, fruit garden, vegetable patch and greenhouse, the home of honey bees, doves and hens.

About The Old Vicarage

Mixed borders include interest from early spring to autumn with some unusual plants and plant combinations. Spring border under huge lime tree with snowdrops, pulmonaria, hellebores and ferns. Summer borders combining flowering shrubs, with roses and perennials. Banks planted for autumn colour including grasses, helenium, helianthus and eupatorium.
Courtyard garden spectacular in spring with rhododendrons and tulips in large pots, and lilies, bamboo and hostas in summer. To one side of the courtyard is the fernery where exotic plants and tender ferns are grown. Kitchen garden with soft fruit, orchard, vegetable garden and greenhouse. Various creatures live in the kitchen garden, a flock of white doves, three hens and a hive or two of honey bees.
Fantastic views overlooking the valley leading to Blackrocks.
Teas can be taken on the front terrace, the courtyard or the fernery if the weather is inclement.

Travelling N on A6 from Derby turn L at Cromford, at top of hill turn R onto Porter Ln, at T-lights, turn R onto Main St. Park on Main St near DWT. Walk through churchyard. No parking at house.

This garden opens for By Arrangement visits from March to 14 September for groups of between 5 and 20.

Accessibility

  • Path through Churchyard ends in some steep steps leading onto the lane and into the garden gate. Once in the garden much can be seen from the terrace.

Yes, dogs are welcome at The Old Vicarage. Please keep the dogs on fixed short leads in the garden and keep in mind that you are responsible for controlling the dog’s behaviour. For any specific rules please ask the owners.
