About The Walled Garden, Little Plumstead
The Victorian kitchen garden dating from around 1840 has been recently restored and includes the Little Plumstead Walled Garden Community Shop and Cafe. The whole enterprise is run largely by volunteers.
The walls are planted with fruit trees most of which date from around the time the garden was created. The area is divided into four section with two cutting beds containing a range of flowers including many old fashioned annuals and perennials. An orchard/meadow contains orchids and meadow cranesbill together with medlar, crab apple and quince.
The final section is a mixed bed of shrubs and herbaceous planting. There is also a Mediterranean style area in the south west corner. There is a fine mixture of familiar and less well known plants. All the paths are suitable for wheelchair access. The glasshouse is a working glasshouse and also contains decorative plants such as bougainvillea, pelagoniums and winter flowering bulbs. There are lots of sitting out areas within the whole garden.
