About The Windmill
Over a period of 25 years, an acre and a half of wilderness has been transformed into a haven of peace and tranquility. Gorgeous views stretching across the garden from all angles highlight differing seasonal beds with specific palettes of colour. The design follows the dictates of the Mill at the centre of the garden with an orchard (for cogs), workshops and mill specific work spaces. The planting of nigh on 50,000 bulbs brings the garden into the new year soon added to by the blossom of the fruit trees. As the bulbs begin to fade so the Rosa Banksiae Lutea starts to bring forth clusters of lemony yellow flowers from April to June, soon to be joined by a white Wisteria followed in turn by rambling roses climbing through the bordering trees, including Kiftsgate and Appleblossom. Then the later flowering plants come into their own, including crocosmia, canna, dahlias and fuchsias. Autumn begins with the ornamental vine running riot, and much in the garden continues flowering with a new winter bed enabling a Boxing Day circuit to count what species are still out – usually 25+! Hard landscaping includes the Millstone seating area,Tree God Fountain, and the most innovative composting area in the whole of Cambridgeshire! The Windmill (an C18 smock on a C19 tower on a C17 base on C16 foundations) comes near to restoration after having been placed on the “at risk” register and gives stunning views of all points of the garden for the venturesome.
