About 1 Ystrad House
The grounds of Ystrad House, a Regency Villa of earlier origins, were once extensive, but have been greatly reduced over the last 70 years. The section acquired by us together with part of the house in 2002 was a barren wilderness, the only remains of its former state being some mature yew trees. Since then we have developed a garden, the aim being that of calm and tranquillity reminiscent perhaps of a sepia photograph. In fact a secret and unexpected town garden. This has been achieved by using broad lawns and wide borders with understated colours and the creation of vistas. More intimate features including pots, urns, pools, sudden turnings and a viewing platform lend interest and surprise.
The entrance to the garden, a narrow door, from an often busy street, opens into a small walled garden and greenhouse. This leads to the main formal area which eventually merges with wooded glades leading to a walk alongside the River Teme. The concept is not yet complete and inspiration is ongoing.
