23 St Johns Road

Pass through the black and white gate of this Victorian house into a part-walled gardener’s haven. Bulbs, alpines and shady woodlanders in spring and masses of unusual herbaceous plants and climbers. Numerous Japanese maples. Many spots to sit in sun or shade. Steps and gravel in places. Gardener is keen Hardy Plant Society member and sows far too many seeds, so always something good for sale.

About 23 St Johns Road

A sheltered town garden with a country feel. An old Victorian brick wall, south-facing, gives protection to interesting climbers. On the opposite shady side there are shade-loving plants – Epimedium, Brunnera., Pulmonaria and masses of spring bulbs. The bog garden by the wildlife pond hosts plants which revel in moisture – Trollius, Filipendula and Rodgersia. Two greenhouses provide extra warmth and give propagation opportunities. At the far end of the garden we have converted a shed into an outdoor kitchen – great for NGS Open Days and family entertaining! Dahlias, Cannas and Tetrapanax provide late colour and foliage interest. A revolving summerhouse catches the sun, and shelters gardeners and visitors on rainy days. There are always plenty of plants for sale – come and see for yourself!
