About Bramble House
This 0.9 acre garden has been developed by Jane and Gareth over the last 25 years; a working couple with limited time who garden 1-2 days a week. The garden is heavy clay soil which is soggy in the winter and baked hard in the summer. Conserving water and planting to the conditions is a necessity. We also have to contend with rabbits and deer but are blessed with an abundance of other garden visitors, songbirds, raptors, insects and even a hare. No chemicals are used on the grass which has created a bio-diverse lawn.
We recycle and upcycle wherever possible and have even turned a redundant swimming pool into a petanque pitch and gazebo, using the bricks from the walls to fill gabions and create new borders. It’s a great spot to catch the sun, have a BBQ and play boules.
The front garden has been redesigned to cope with extreme heat in summer and has been planted in a paler colour scheme which becomes richer in autumn; a lovely view from the kitchen windows.
The veg plot has evolved into a ‘no dig’ zone to save time and labour and a new experimental bed has been made from the lawn with the same principle: killing off the grass with layers of cardboard and mulch rather, than digging it up or using chemicals, then planting through the cardboard.
Mature trees add colour and scale. Hedges give natural boundaries which blend into the neighbouring fields and footpath, softening the edges of the garden.
This year we have created a dead hedge to reduce the amount of material ending up on the bonfire. Its amazing how much hedging and pruning has been consumed which creates and home for birds and wildlife.
