About Four Acres
This garden has been in the Webster family since 1946 and long before this a family business was carried on from this site. The garden has been expanding and evolving since then and we have made the planting more informal over the years. An orchard was rooted out and transformed into a potager, which makes us largely self-sufficient in vegetables, and espalier apples and pears were planted along a sunny fence. Existing island beds have been gradually replanted to give yr-round colour, while the newer planting along the drive has been selected to give autumn and winter interest. In the past few years we have removed several huge conifers, to let in light, and are enjoying the improved growing conditions this has produced. Several areas have been replanted during the pandemic to allow us to grow some of our new favourite plants. The garden faces south west across a wide, open valley and is very much exposed to the prevailing winds. Combined with a light, sandy soil, this gives challenging growing conditions, but the soil is fertile and a wide variety of plants thrive here.
