About New Wood House, 19 The Beacon
Of about 1½ acres, the garden at New Wood House is on a steep slope looking west over the Isle Valley, with views framed by the Blackdowns and the Quantocks. Since moving here in 2015, the owners have embarked on a major restoration, retaining what is best from previous periods – some fine trees and the basic structure of paths and hedges. It is on three terraces, formal Italianate below the house, merging into a mini arboretum and orchard. On one side is a ‘wilderness’ and ‘Himalayas’; on the other, a holly and rose walk. Below, the new nut walk leads to a ‘stumpery’/‘loggery’. The drive has many unusual trees and shrubs, with a small collection of wild-sourced acers. At the bottom of the garden there are a number of unusual oaks, which are beginning to take shape. The young trees are growing fast, because of the mild climate and good alluvial.
Car Parking along the road outside the house.
