About The Lodge, Tissington Gates
Although The Lodge was built around 1730 and is a Grade II listed property, including the surrounding dry stone walls, the garden itself is undergoing a transformation and still to reach full maturity. Clare and Patrick are relatively new to gardening so this is very much their passion project with numerous plants being brought on from seed in the greenhouse.
In addition to a collection of telescopes, the garden also has a system of automatic meteor detection cameras which record data for international research centres, helping to understand the origins of meteorites which fall to Earth. There’s also an aurora camera capturing the colourful northern lights when all the right conditions are in place.
For visitors who’d like also explore further, the Tissington Solar System, is a short self-guided walking route around the village and the creation of registered charity Scopes4SEN (telescopes for special educational needs). The walk starts from The Lodge and offers an ideal opportunity for curious minds of all ages to learn more about the planets that make up our solar system.
