The Mount

Nature is given the upper-hand in this small cottage garden with self-seeded foxgloves, verbascum and fennel accentuating the design of beautiful garden spaces, lovingly created by tall grasses, rose swags and water-troughs. This allows visitors of all kinds their own hidden space and sanctuary, from birds and hedgehogs (and the odd weed) to holiday-makers enjoying their breakfast in the garden.

About The Mount

This is a small, cottage garden at the Mount Bed & Breakfast property in the pretty Lakeland village of Portinscale, 5 minutes walk from beautiful Derwentwater, and 20 minutes walk from Keswick. Despite its restricted size, and the challenges of being on a slope, with strong winds from the nearby lake, it’s a little gem. With a hectic life running a B&B and family responsibilities, and never enough time to ‘control’ the garden, Caroline has developed an intuitive approach to gardening, allowing plants to arrange themselves and create connections and interesting combinations. The overall effect is inviting, romantic and a little wild.

The garden feels timeless – with echoes to its history as a flower nursery, a smallholding and a guesthouse – with gorgeous roses, water troughs for the wildlife and lovely garden spaces for guests to sit and enjoy glimpses of the nearby fells and the peaceful atmosphere (as well as tea and cake!).

A great day out could combine a visit to The Mount guesthouse garden as well as the impressive Lingholm Kitchen and Walled Garden (inspiration for Beatrix Potter’s stories of Peter Rabbit and Mr McGregor’s garden) for something to eat, also in Portinscale village. Or you could also squeeze in a lakeshore walk or a trip to Keswick.

There are steep steps at the entrance to the garden as well as gravel paths throughout the garden which may be difficult for the less mobile visitor.
