About The Old Bakery

The Old Bakery, Flore, retains the original features that have been very much part of its history, including the C18 & C19 machinery including the oven doors, a mangle worzle, cake crusher and the bellows that fired the Ovens. In every sense a working bakery! The last bread was taken out of the ovens in 1960. After many years of neglect and dereliction, the Bakery went through a major renovation project followed in 2000 with the garden having its first properly designed garden in its 400 years of history. At the outset, the vicinity of the house was bereft of foliage and required that necessary addition to link the house with the garden. In order to retain the maximum area around the house, careful use of Box in long trains with intermittent Box balls lead you down the steep slopes from the garden to the courtyard, linking the two areas. Further Box lines walls, all adding to a structure that is green throughout the year. Colours of limes and orange burst forth from groups of terracotta pots and urns. At the base of the tall gable end of a new build bakery completed in 1888 sits three large Yew spirals in giant terracotta pots, to give the perception of the building being lower than it really is. Since 2000 the garden has matured quickly and incorporates a series of terraces that make excellent practical spaces for entertaining and relaxation. The planting throughout, ranges from the exotic to the unusual, with special attention given to plants for shady areas. A small lawn with border acts as a relaxation area, a C19 French gazebo houses a unique collection of Queen-Empresses that sit within, while Clematis and Roses named after the Queen-Empresses climb over the gazebo. A small but fruitful vegetable garden provides the house with fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the year. Potatoes grown in terracotta pots. The art of gardening is to enjoy, relax and eat healthily with your friends. A recent makeover completed in 2020.
