About The Old Mill
Over 30 years the owners have transformed the garden from a mainly unseen space to a unique accolade to the wild and partially tamed beauty of the River Kennet and its side streams. Initially young children played and explored here, then more fenced in areas were created to enable the planting of vegetables and flowers that would otherwise be eaten by the abundant wildlife. Many areas have been opened up and paths mown throughout the 20 acres. The main garden is over 6 acres, which includes hornbeam, yew and box hedges enclosing some areas and leading to views of the meadows and hills beyond.
Later in the year, dahlias abound to extend the colourful flowering season.
The use of chemicals is kept to a minimum to maximise insect life and thereby increase the birds and animals that we share our space with.
Children are welcome to paddle in the shallow parts of the river near the house, under the watchful eye of their parents and carers who can enjoy the refreshments being served nearby.
