About The Old Vicarage
This 1½ acre plantman’s garden has been developed over the last 27 years by the owner. Planting is distinctive and mature, packed with rare, unusual and interesting features. A nuttery, shade garden, winter gardens, golden glade, turf maze and orchard flank the drive to the 1837 neo-Jacobean revival house, mentioned in Pevsner (not open). The house is surrounded by courtyard, fountain and desert gardens, plus a large jungle area with many magnolias, and safari park, dinosaur and ‘Jungle Book’ animal statues. Further away from the house are lawned, rose, allee, kitchen, sunken, scented and chimney gardens, with many classical statues, glasshouses and a small formal pond. There is a large pond with a summerhouse, surrounded by a modest arboretum, with unusual trees, shrubs and perennials, a grass garden and an impressive dragon. The garden has many seats, an African hut and a large garden room with sofas. Refreshments are served in the courtyard, amongst colourful container planting.
