About Briarwood
‘Briarwood’ is a mature but still developing garden in two parts: firstly, a large terrace contains potted bulbs including tulips, narcissi, fritillaria, puschkinia and chinodoxa, acacia tree and plants such as camellia, olive, fig, restio and house leeks. There are Mediterranean style seating areas under an unusual pergola with grapevines, hop and rose climbers; a path leads past a tall scots pine to south-facing lawn and borders with spring flowering shrubs and primroses, aconites, snowdrops, grape hyacinth, tulips, mixed varieties of daffodils planted under apple and blossom trees, including a mature amelanchier (snowy mespilus). There is an area for shade-lovers with woodland planting such as young silver birches, ferns, hostas and snake’s head fritillaria. Tall hedging protects palms, climbers, shrubs and herbaceous perennials and a fish pond with local stone features, acers, lilies, grasses and rushes. Secondly, through a bespoke wrought iron gate, there is a secret garden with a secluded garden cabin in a small orchard with soft fruit bushes, raised bed potager and greenhouse and with succulent collection. The garden has all year round interest in both structure and flowering and includes some unusual trees and plants such as Wollemi Pine, New Zealand Kowhai and Acacia Pravissima. There is a healthy variety of bird and wildlife visitors and the garden has a range of quirky features throughout, including bespoke metal and stone sculptures and intriguing faces to watch out for!
