Forest Hill Garden Group

Walk up from the station or bus stops, perhaps through the award-winning Horniman Gardens and discover three very different gardens. A charming garden filled with fruit trees lower down will take you back to a time when this area was rich in orchards. See the sculptures in an artist’s walled courtyard garden around a C18 coach house, where pots of all sizes are planted for year-round interest. Then, sample savouries and cakes with your tea on the lawn of a country style garden designed for children as well as gardeners, featuring a large chicken run, raised vegetable beds, a greenhouse, fruit cage, and meadow.

About Forest Hill Garden Group

A group of four charming gardens, all within a short walk of each other. We can offer lifts between the gardens for those who cannot walk for a donation to NGS.

The artist’s courtyard garden has her own sculptures, fountain, birdbath and decorative plants in pots large and small for interest all year round. Check out the stunning Double Black Dragon Wisteria.

A sloping garden with now-dry river bed where you can imagine yourself back to when the hill was covered in orchards. Plum, cherry and apple trees spread their branches, strawberries tumble out of pots and a young mulberry and currant bushes get heavy with fruit. The owner is ever busy making jams and preserves or watching the huge variety of birds she encourages in.

In the next road up is a peaceful, beautifully planted garden with shrubs and borders divided into areas centred around a large pond, and with spectacular views of London. Sit and rest by the waterfall or on the patio looking out over the city skyline.

A country style, vintage garden in two sections: a large chicken run, fruit cage, vegetable beds and composting area behind a meadow, borders and lawn where you can sit to enjoy homemade cakes.  Activities to keep children entertained. New paths, pergola and planting since last opening – all with climate change and sustainability in mind.
