About Prior's Piece
Originally part of the grounds of the Priory, the garden was laid out in the 1980s in a formal style with lawns and Buxus hedges, including some interesting trees such as Ginkgoes, several Acers and flowering shrubs, but no herbaceous borders or flowers to speak of. The terrace is surrounded by Buxus hedges and consists of a circular paved area which, with the addition of a traditional urn, forms the central feature of the garden. The Magnolia in Spring is a spectacular sight, greatly enjoyed, but the season is all too short. It is hoped it will still be in bloom but if not there are many others to enjoy. We have made it our policy not to use weed-killers or pesticides and as far as possible rely on home compost and manure. In order to try to have more sustainable areas for wildlife of all kinds, some things may seem a bit rough round the edges. The lawn contains an interesting mixture of plants such as Clover, Yellow Clover Weed, Daisies, Yarrow, Camomile, and Bergamot. The Dovecote garden is a sheltered tranquil area with formal Buxus hedges and surrounded by trees, historic buildings and view of the church.
