About Swafield Hall
Swafield Hall is a 16th century Manor House with Georgian additions (not open), set within 4 acres of gardens including a parterre (designed by Martin Perry) including a large variety of roses and gladioli. Against the house there are climbing roses and a pair of magnificent magnolias grandiflora.
Walk along the Apollo promenade of theatrical serpentine hedging towards the statue of Apollo Belvedere and you will reach the stunning Summer garden containing 8 flower beds filled with beautiful plants, herbs and flowers. The Victorian brick wall protects the gardens from the north wind and you can find Apricot, Peach, Pear, Nectarine and sour cherry trees.
The impressive Pear Tunnel leads to the little garden pavilion surrounded by jasmine, where you can enjoy the view to the orchard containing espalier apples and several Norfolk varieties including the “Norfolk Royal”. There are six varieties of pears in the Pear Tunnel and orchard, including “Concorde”, “Williams”, “Doyenne de Comice”, “Conference”, “Robin” and a local pear “Blickling”.
The Autumn garden contains irises, lilies and many beautiful dahlias and is adjacent to the marble statue of Apollo Belvedere.
The Secret Oriental Garden contains nine flower beds taken from the pattern of a Persian carpet. You can take a rest here, sitting under a lime tree canopy and enjoy the lavender borders and fragrant roses, including “Rhapsody In Blue”, “Blue Moon”, “Pascali” and “Black Baccara” with petals of deepest maroon.
A short walk over grassland takes you to the duck pond with a beautiful view over the gardens to the Hall and you can return over the main lawn or via a woodland walk.
The whole garden is accessible by wheelchair.
