The Manor House

Ashby Manor House is located at the far end of the pretty village of Ashby St Ledgers in Northamptonshire. Famed for being the home of Robert Catesby of Gunpowder plot notoriety, its beautifully landscaped gardens are the work of Edwin Lutyens at the turn of the century. New owners have restored the ancient walled garden with the help of talented designer Daniel Combes.

About The Manor House

Ashby Manor House is one of the most intriguing and historic houses in England. From 1375 to 1611 it was the home of the Catesby family. In 1605 Robert Crosby and his fellow conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, gathered in the Manor’s gatehouse. There they conspired to King James I and his courtiers by blowing up the Houses of Parliament in one of England’s most notorious acts of treason, the gunpowder plot.

The house was purchased by the 1st Viscount Wimborne at the turn of the century and the most recent owners are descendants. Nova Guest has set about improving existing planting beds in the formal gardens including the canal parterre garden and statue garden. She has also enlisted the help of the designer Daniel Combes to restore the ancient walled garden with a series of paths, a croquet lawn, a rose boarder, peony boarder, rose cutting garden, a series of tulip/dahlia cutting beds, an orchard and trained fruit espaliered along oak posts.

Nova grows all the annuals and many perennials from seed in the greenhouse every spring. The house is run as a business now hosting weddings, parties, conferences and workshops.
