About Sunningdale
Sunningdale, is situated in the heart of the market town of Wem, where we are fortunate to have a flat half acre town garden.
Incorporating sculptural elements throughout the garden, to enhance the planting.
There is a large sunken area with koi pond and beautiful rockeries and waterfall, the pond is also home to a large colony of palmate newts which can be viewed.
The garden also features a yew tree walkway, ( trees approximately 400 yrs.old) which creates a sound and pollution barrier from the road. Lawson Cypress trees have been cut down and unusual steel ferns top their high stumps, giving the impression of tree ferns.
There is a stumpery with a good collection of ferns and grasses. Large borders filled with perennials, climbers and unusual shrubs.
To the back of the house there is a gravel garden, with a good variety of small trees and shrubs.
The 1911 house boasts a wonderful original Arts and Crafts kitchen from which teas will be served. A 1930’s Summer House is available to sit in to take shelter or just enjoy views of the garden. In 2020 a new all weather gazebo built, with plantings around, and in 2022 a solar roofed Loggia was completed in 2024. In 2025 the front garden is having a makeover.
The vegetable plots are varied and irrigated using a borehole on the property.
The garden is home to frogs, newts, dragonflies, solitary bees, and field mice and bank voles.
Visiting birds are very varied including the tiny Gold Crests, which regularly nest and tree creepers.
Koi pond and natural stone waterfall rockery. Antique and modern sculpture. Sound break yew walkway. Large perennial borders, with rare plants, unusual annuals, exotic climbers, designed by owner as an all year-round garden.
There is no disabled parking at the property, but a ‘free on Sunday’ public car park in both Barnard Street just off Mill Street, and the CoOp car park, off the High St. We are opposite the purple house below the church, or the Co-Op car park is just a 5 minute walk away..
