12 Lansdowne Road, London: a country garden in the capital

A typical London arrangement of front and back garden in size and shape, 12 Lansdowne Road is given the appearance of a soft country garden by its planting that has been skilfully blended together by the owner, Amabel Lindsay.

The relaxed rural atmosphere comes from the easy style of planting with flowering trees and shrubs shading informally mixed border planting. At this time of year there are camellias and lilac which like pale mauve wallflowers gives off delightfully old-fashioned scent. Bright tulips are scattered through in some places, pheasant-eye narcissus in another. On one side of the garden great tresses of wisteria and an even more spectacular Banksian rose, covered with masses of noisette butter-yellow flowers, provide the perfect backdrop and boundary.

Bright pink Dicentra spectabilis produces its arcing stems of distinctive heart-shaped flowers, but perhaps most striking of all is the group of tender climbing geraniums whose flowers cover the wall of the greenhouse. A secretive pathway leads beneath the Banksian rose, past a luxuriant white tree peony while elsewhere Viburnum maresii produces its contrastingly flat layers of which flowers. The whole scene is understated and yet with vibrant flashes, a very English garden.
