A garden designer’s garden with Japanese influence and a large collection of Acer palmatum Japanese maples. The enclosed front garden is Japanese in style. The back garden is divided into three areas: a patio area recently redesigned in the Japanese style; a densely planted area with many acers and roses; and a corner that inc a productive greenhouse and interesting planting. A 2 acre garden created over the last 38 yrs, with a wide range of flowering and foliage plants in a variety of habitats for all year interest. Many different bulbs, perennials, shrubs, roses, and grasses, together with trees planted for their flowers, foliage, ornamental bark, and autumn colour give a continual display. The present garden covers around 12 acres, inc the walled kitchen garden crisscrossed by paths lined with vegetables, fruit, herbs, and flowers. A plantsman’s garden in the Chiltern Hills, with a great variety of trees, shrubs, and plants. A sloping lawn leads to a natural swimming pond with wild flowers, inc native orchids. There is a lodge greenhouse and a good collection of half-hardy plants in pots. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 13 February to 27 September for groups of 10+.
A Japanese garden, shielded from the upper garden level by Shoji screens. A winding path leads over a traditional Japanese bridge by a pond and waterfall, and invites you through a moongate to reveal a purpose built tea house. The garden is surrounded by traditional Japanese planting, inc maples, cherry blossom trees, azaleas, and rhododendrons. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 27 April to 4 September.
A beautiful 3 acre garden with primroses, daffodils, and hellebores in early spring. It is interesting throughout most of the year, with lovely herbaceous borders, a rill with a small ornamental canal, a walled garden, an old orchard with a wildlife pond, and handsome trees, some of which are topiary. A stunning, exceptional 6 acre garden, constantly evolving! Our garden sits on 6 acres of old farmland offering great views. Over the last 8 yrs, many trees and shrubs have been planted. A natural stream flows into a pond with a deck to sit and rest on. A small copse of woodland is being developed, and large grass sculptures sway in the wind. Described by visitors as ‘a real gardener’s garden’. A fairly new 1½ acre garden set around a Grade II listed former brickmaker’s cottage (not open). The garden features borders packed with perennials, a small meadow, and a small orchard, creating a haven for wildlife. A garden of almost 3 acres, created from a rough field over 28 yrs ago. A series of terraces cut into the sloping site form the formal garden, with long and cross vistas, lawns, and deep borders. The aim is to provide interest throughout the year with naturalistic planting and views borrowed from the surrounding countryside. Artistic chalk garden on two levels. Collection of C17/C18 plants, inc auriculas, hellebores, bulbs, pulmonarias, peonies, geraniums, herbs, and succulents. Antique species and rambling roses. Potager and a lily pond. Blue and white ribbon border. The cottage was once a C17 fever house for Missenden Abbey. This Chiltern hillside garden of 1½ acres is planted for year-round interest and has superb views. Lovingly and beautifully maintained, it offers several different areas to relax in, each with its own character. A wildflower orchard, mixed borders, a pond, vegetables, a woodland area, and a lovely hidden garden. Many climbers in the garden change significantly through the seasons. This is a garden designer’s own garden at the start of the Chilterns. It features informal planting with a variety of trees, woodland-edge plants, shade borders, shrubs, perennials, and grass borders that blend into pastureland, now restored to a beautiful long-grass meadow. There is a mature cherry orchard, chickens, and a vegetable garden. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 25 May to 2 August for groups of between 15 and 30.
The Shades drive is approached through mature trees, with areas of shade loving plants, beds of shrubs, and herbaceous plants. The rear garden with a natural well, surrounded by plants, shrubs, roses, and acers. A green slate water feature and a scree garden with alpine plants complete the garden. A 2 acre garden containing drifts of common snowdrops, along with a few unusual ones. Strong structure provided by terracing, walls, and topiarised yew hedging. Your visit will begin with a short, illustrated talk about snowdrop varieties, before you explore the snowdrops lining a shrubbery path, woodland path, and rockery. Naturalised snowdrops also line the lawn on either side of the driveway. The visit will end with tea and cakes. Grade II registered. A series of garden rooms, each with a different planting style, envelops the architect’s own Grade II* listed house (not open). A dry garden, formal box garden, sunken gardens, and mixed borders around a curving lawn, all framed by ancient walls and mature trees. Plantings inc bulbs, irises, wisteria, roses, ferns, and climbers. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 11 March to 3 June for groups of between 10 and 20.
A 3 acre, wildlife friendly, year-round garden comprising informal woodland and wild gardens, separated by streams. Many shrubs and trees, several variegated or uncommon, along with marginal and bog plants, and a bed of stripy roses. ‘Stunning’ was the word most often used by visitors. Persistent rain in 2023/24 killed some shrubs, but a large new, drier bed now houses replacements. Opens for By Arrangement visits for groups of 10+.
A country garden with a series of rooms, each with its own planting style: a formal box parterre with gazebo, knot garden, pool garden with grasses and perennials, Victorian style glasshouse with scented pelargoniums, a garden with raised beds of dahlias and herbs, two stumperies with hellebores and ferns, woodland and meadow walks with wonderful views, and a labyrinth.
