Pom pom wreath
These are great if you want a wreath for an inside door or don’t have access to a garden to forage for a more traditional wreath. We scoured our local charity shops for supplies and found plenty of wool in a whole range of colours which made this a very budget friendly project.
You could embellish your pom-pom wreath by adding some fairy lights or glittery wool.
What you need:
Wool (we used five different colours in ours)
A loop of wire or wreath frame
Scissors
Thin card (eg a cereal box)
Pencil
Something round to draw around the size you want your pom-pom and something smaller for an inner hole
Method:
- Draw and cut out two circles the size you want your pom-poms. Mark your hole in the centre and cut it out making a slit from the outer to inner circle; this gap will make it much easier to wrap your thread around the discs.
- Line your two circles up over each other and wind your wool around repeatedly. Don’t go too close to the gap and you’ll make it easier for yourself at the next step if you don’t wrap it too tightly!
- Once you have a good amount of wool wrapped around your disc, slip the scissors between the two discs. This is the fiddliest bit; it helps to have fabric scissors or very sharp scissors and keep one side of the disc flat to the table while you cut to help stop the short pieces of wool escaping!
- Being careful to keep all your little strands in place, take a short length of wool in the same colour and, using the card discs as a guide, wrap it round the middle and tie the pom pom together.
- Remove the card templates and tidy up any wool that looks out of place. I recommend keeping the long stands from the last step to help you secure the pom poms onto your wreath ring.
- Repeat until you have enough pom poms to fill your wreath. You can make card templates of different sizes to add a bit more variety to your poms.
