WHISH in bloom
WHISH (Whitby Hidden Impairments Support & Help) is a parent led small charity supporting over 150 children and young people in the Whitby & Esk Valley rural area who have a disability or hidden impairment.
The charity came into some outside space for the first time in 15 years which offered an opportunity to create a sensory garden, play area, wildlife habitat space and vegetable garden. The plan was for volunteers and young people to work together creating these spaces and the vegetable and herb gardens would eventually lead to cooking sessions using the produce. They hoped this would foster a passion for gardening and the natural works in those using the gardens.
They applied for a National Garden Scheme Community Garden Grant to help with gardening tools, storage, plants, bulbs and planting material. They recently got in touch to let us know how the project was going.
They said the garden ‘is a tremendous asset to the charity, and the local community, we are very grateful. It has encouraged children and families to garden, grow and cook food, and has been a haven for those families who do not have any outside space of their own. Inspired by what your grant started, local firms and organisations such as the Rotary club, have helped the charity with volunteer time, funding, etc. to further enhance our lovely garden area. We will keep developing it in 2025 and beyond.’
We look forward to seeing what they do next!
