The gardens at Cragwood Country House are an integral part of the property’s rich history and charm. The gardens were originally designed in the late C19 by the renowned landscape architect Thomas Hayton Mawson, who was known for his work in the Lake District and other parts of England. Mawson created a beautiful formal garden with carefully manicured lawns, elegant flower beds, and striking topiary, as well as a peaceful woodland walk and a charming rock garden. Rydal Mount was the family home of William Wordsworth. Wordsworth considered himself as good a landscape gardener as a poet, and the Rydal Mount garden is the largest example of his design. The garden stretches over 5 acres and inc the terraces that Wordsworth built, informal herbaceous borders, trees planted by the poet and a wonderful range of traditional lakeland plants. Hutton-in-the-Forest is surrounded on two sides by distinctive yew topiary and grass terraces – which to the south lead to C18 lake and cascade. 1730s walled garden is full of old fruit trees, tulips in spring, roses and an extensive collection of herbaceous plants in summer.
