About 2 Briarlea

Since moving to the village in October 2016, Richard & Carolyn have carried out significant rejuvenation and redevelopment work on the garden. The garden has minimal topsoil, and raised beds have been used to create greater planting depth. Two gravel areas feature hostas and grasses, and alongside the stream terracing has been introduced to enable herbaceous planting in sunny and shady areas. Another shady bed has been turned into a fernery. Climbing roses have been used to give height, and a 25m shrub rose border, with nepeta and verbena, has been created along the front boundary. Numerous mixed beds complete the picture, with many plants chosen to be of interest to the flower arranger. Richard is Chair of the Northumbria Branch of the British Cactus and Succulent Society, and his greenhouses house a collection of over 1000 plants, many nearly as old as he is! Refreshments and Plant Stall approx. 100m away at 7 Thornlea, the home of Mike & Pat Stansbie, a garden currently being developed with another fine collection of cacti and other succulents on display.
