Broad Street House

A big garden, under constant development with wonderful views down the Brede Valley. The garden features a wide variety of trees, a good number of flower beds, a natural pond much loved by wildlife, with a waterfall and viewing bridge. At the beginning of last year, the owners added a large waterfall with associated woodland planting to the front of the property.

About Broad Street House

We bought Broad Street House in late 2010, and it was clear from the wonderful mature trees that much attention had been given to the gardens. Nevertheless, over time, ivy and brambles had started to dominate. Our priority was to reclaim the garden, compost it and start planting. We then began to seriously develop it. We have built new beds including an extensive rockery, enclosed vegetable garden and planted the pond. On the building front we have added a substantial greenhouse, a potting shed, a bridge giving access to the rear of the pond, a waterfall in the pond and recently a further waterfall at the entrance. We have added underground rainwater tanks and make most of our compost. We now have a significant number of beds, some tucked away so that they surprise you when walking around. These include our ‘Hot Bed’, with its emphasis on colour, the Long Border which has the new waterfall and a wide variety of woodland plants and also a Fern Garden, which reminds my kiwi husband of his New Zealand homeland. We are on clay soil and have had to learn what we can and cannot plant, although we will always give a plant a number of chances, by moving ‘the strugglers’ to different spots. We inherited many beautiful trees, and it is our aim to plant more. This is somewhat challenging as the beautiful views, come with strong winds, especially the ‘Beast from the East’.

The aim is to have a spring and summer garden, hence our opening in April and July. Those visiting in April will not only see a mass of colour in our garden but also a splendid display of bluebells in our woods, which are 5-10 minute walk from the main house, bring boots!

In spring parking is limited due to the soft ground.
