High Close

Set behind an historic C17 house (not open) and within a walled garden, this hidden gem is just a few moments from the bustling market street in Baldock. A semi formal, contemporary walled garden, landscaped in the early 1980s, was updated in 2020 by Daniel Shea design.

About High Close

The lovely walled garden has traditional herbaceous borders filled with pastel coloured favourite plants, an ancient mulberry tree and a recently renovated orangery with a painted mural on the wall. A newly constructed raised water feature which incorporates an impressive millstone provides a quiet moment for contemplation when overlooking the formal lawn and the abundant flower borders.

In 2020 we asked garden designer Daniel Shea to bring a more modern look to the garden. He transformed the lower sun terrace into a sunken gravel garden with hot fiery perennials and a introduced a raised corten steel reflection pool adorned with water lilies. A large oak gazebo provides a shady retreat from the midday sun and a chance to take in the garden from a different perspective. Garden City Paving undertook the groundwork and we are delighted with the result.
