Marlais

The garden at Marlais is the smallest NGS garden in Ceredigion and was designed for easy access, no-dig and low maintenance to suit more mature gardeners with some disability. To the front we have a mini-orchard with 20 varieties of top-fruit on dwarfing rootstocks underplanted with bulbs, primroses and cowslips. The rear garden has a paved patio area with raised beds planted with an exceptional variety of unusual shrubs and herbaceous plants. Raised vegetable and soft-fruit beds are screened by trellis with tayberry, loganberry, blackberry, boysenberry and Japanese wineberry. Three pergolas add height, support climbers and provide attractive seating areas.

About Marlais

The small garden at Marlais offers many ideas to make the most of a modest plot which many visitors will find is of similar size to their own. The garden was designed for easy access and maintenance to suit more mature gardeners with some disability.

To the front we have planted a mini orchard with many varieties of top fruit on dwarfing rootstocks surrounded by colour-themed beds with many unusual herbaceous plants and shrubs. The paved patio at the rear is flanked by a productive greenhouse with raised timber herb beds on either side of the door and raised flower beds in shades of pink, red, purple and white. In a south facing corner, there is a seat beneath an arbour of roses, clematis and passion flowers. Runner beans clothe a second arbour between the raised vegetable beds which leads to a secluded covered seat with a mirror which is cleverly placed to increase the apparent depth of the garden. Trellis with tayberry, loganberry, blackberry and wineberry screens raised soft fruit beds with currants, gooseberries, raspberries, blueberries and rhubarb underplanted with Alpine strawberries giving over 40 varieties of fruit.
