About Trewidden Garden
Set in the hills west of Penzance, Trewidden is steeped in history and natural beauty. The Garden was started in 1848 by Edward Bolitho and then his son Thomas Bedford Bolitho, prominent local businessman and MP, made it one of the most esteemed gardens west of Truro. Thomas’s daughter Mary, who married Charles William of Caerhays continued to garden at Trewidden until her death in 1976 . More recently, Alverne Bolitho, through the enthusiasm and ability of Head Gardeners Michael Snellgrove and now Richard Morton, has reinvigorated the place. The gardens are always peaceful and, in these beautiful surroundings, many unusual species of exotic shrubs and ferns from milder climates flourish. A woodland garden, it offers an unforgettable orchestra of colour, particularly in the spring months, when the camellias (there are more than 300 varieties on display), magnolias and rhododendrons for which the Garden is famed, are at their best. The magnolias include some of the largest in the country, including ‘Trewidden Belle’, which is unique to the Garden. In addition, there is a spectacular collection of tree-ferns set in the bowl of an ancient open-cast tine mine and probably the finest such collection in the northern hemisphere.
