Yr Hen Felin: Beautiful cottage garden with stunning borders, breathtaking wildflower meadows, oak tree with surrounding bench, 200 year old pig sty, wishing well, secret garden with steps to river, lovingly tended vegetable garden and chickens, sheep and alpacas. The Barns: The area around the house is formal with mixed herbaceous borders, and a rose walk to a small secluded pond. The meandering paths pass small garden rooms and raised beds for vegetables, runs alongside the River Waycock through an orchard and finally through woods, reaches a large pond with water lilies, dragonflies, pontoon with seating and summerhouse. Originally the garden was covered with 40ft conifers. Cottage style, some unusual and mainly perennial plants which provide colour in spring, summer and autumn. The garden is an example of how to plan for all seasons. Visitors say it is like a secret garden because there are a number of hidden places. Set within castle grounds and with a backdrop of an ancient monument, the 3½ acres of garden inc a potager with a hint of the Mediterranean, formal lawns and herbaceous beds, a wildlife pond with waterfall and a woodland garden with stumpery and sculpture. Over 90,000 spring bulbs have been planted inc snowdrops, Narcissi and tulips. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 8th February to 27th September for groups of between 10 and 40.
A hidden garden, in the shadow of Castell Coch, fed by a mountain stream, and a wooden footbridge to a naturalised, woodland area. There are wonderful late spring flower displays set against a woodland backdrop. Developed over many years with a wide variety of lavender beds and herbaceous borders, summerhouse, patios, greenhouse and vegetable area. A spacious interesting garden with many features which inc a stunning natural waterfall, a meandering woodland stream covered by a canopy of entwined trees, a picturesque Japanese garden, beautiful lawned areas with winding pathways. We have a traditional Welsh working cottage garden with jumbled flower beds, a herb yard, seasonal growing of fruit and vegetables, ideas borrowed from permaculture, no-dig and companion planting to help us with our simple, self-reliant way of life. This family friendly garden started from a blank canvas 7 years ago, initially laid to lawn. Raised vegetable beds were installed and a 75m natural hedge planted along the side boundary to encourage wildlife. This was supplemented with fruit trees, flower and herb borders to attract insects. The lawn provides a clearing to the surrounding forestry attracting a variety of birds. Opens for By Arrangement visits for June and July.
An exotic small garden full of unusual and large plants and a pond. Banana plants, tree ferns, gunnera, Tetrapanax and a foxglove tree surround the garden. Ferns, Phormium, Brunnera, Brugmansia, Cordyline and giant reed add interest to the garden. An area of potted tropical plants, Brugmansia, Canna, Alocasia, Colocasia, Strelitzia and palms add to the significant variety of exotic plants.
