A walled garden next to the River Hoddnant, recently brought back to use. Formerly an orchard and kitchen garden, the garden has a unique character and has been designed to create a beautiful garden space and encourage wildlife, whilst retaining its unique historic character.
Enjoyed by four generations of same family over 160 years. Many interesting mature trees, young fruit trees, rhododendrons, ponds, numerous rose bushes and standards, and much else of interest, even in the wilder areas. Lawn used for tennis in last century, now smaller and left unmown in parts, wildflowers encouraged. We live and let live, encourage all wildlife, try to garden organically.
Cefn Cribwr is an old mining village atop a ridge with views of Swansea to the west, Somerset to the south and home to Bedford Park and the Cefn Cribwr Iron Works. The village hall is at the centre with teas, cakes and plants for sale. The allotments are to be found behind the hall. Children, art and relaxation are just some of the themes to be found in the gardens besides the flower beds and vegetables. There are also water features, fish ponds, wildlife ponds, summerhouses and hens adding to the diverse mix in the village. Themed colour borders, roses, greenhouses, recycling, composting and much more. The chapel grounds are peaceful with a meandering woodland trail. The Coal Tip Garden is a small personal space created in order to help us relax. Its main character is enclosure and a sense of rest. It is not a flowery garden but is formed out of shrubs and trees – forming a tapestry of hedging with arches and niches being cut out in order to place seats and sculpture and to produce a visual rhythm. A key philosophy is using native perennials.
While it’s the garden you come to view, your first instinct will be to stop and admire the panoramic views over the countryside. The gardens are laid out for all seasons, bulbs and herbaceous in shrub borders. Water features with cascades down to a pond, surrounded by mixed borders and trees, offering shade. Each has its own forte; Waunwyllt’s ½ acre is divided into garden rooms; 28 Maes y Nant, cottage garden planting reigns; 26 Parc y Fro is newly planted with wildlife at its heart. Enjoy a warm welcome, home-made teas and plant sales.
A medium sized, much loved garden. Owners share a passion for plants and structure, each year the lawn gets smaller to allow for the acquisition of new features. Hostas, ferns, acers and other trees form the central woodland theme as a backdrop is provided by the Nant Fawr woods. Year-round interest has been created for the owner’s and visitor’s greater pleasure. There is a wildlife pond, many climbing plants and a greenhouse with cacti, succulents and pelargoniums.
There are many gardens to visit in this small friendly village, all with something different to offer. Displays of vegetables and fruit in the community garden, gardens with exuberant planting providing yearlong interest, wildlife ponds, chickens and a mini vineyard. There will also be plants for sale and refreshments in the different gardens. There are many restful and beautiful areas to sit and relax.

The area around the house is formal with mixed herbaceous borders, and a rose walk to a small secluded pond. The meandering paths pass small garden rooms and raised beds for vegetables, run alongside the River Waycock through an orchard of heritage, apple trees, plums, and cherries, and finally through woods, reaching a large pond with water lilies, dragonflies, pontoon with seating and summerhouse. Teas and cakes are available from the house with seating in the herb garden, and a sale of original water colours. NB Unprotected river access, children must be supervised.
Originally the garden was covered with 40ft conifers. Cottage style, some unusual and mainly perennial plants which provide colour in spring, summer and autumn. The garden is an example of how to plan for all seasons. Visitors say it is like a secret garden because there are a number of hidden places. Plants to encourage all types of wildlife in to the garden.

A row of former miners cottages on the common between Bryncethin and Heol Y Cyw, known as Heol Laethog or Tyn’Waun locally. Sarah Price’s design was inspired by the Welsh landscape. The planting is naturalistic and gentle featuring valerian, poppies, field maple, and crab apples. The garden is adorned with climbers such as clematis, grapes, and roses. Circular openings within the perimeter fence frame the countryside and sea in the distance. It provides beneficiaries with a beautiful place to spend time in year-round.

A hidden garden, in the shadow of Castell Coch, fed by a mountain stream, with a wooden footbridge to a naturalised, woodland area. There are wonderful late spring flower displays set against a woodland backdrop. Developed over many years with a wide variety of lavender beds and herbaceous borders, summerhouse, patios, greenhouse and vegetable area.
A three acre hidden gem outside Bridgend. Entering the garden you find a small Japanese garden fed by a stream, this leads you to informal mixed beds and enclosed herbaceous borders. Ponds and rill are fed by a natural spring. A meadow with large lawns under new planting gives wonderful vistas over surrounding countryside.

An Urban Retreat in the heart of Cardiff. The garden, once overgrown wasteland, turned into an ongoing lockdown’ project in 2020 for owners Kate and Glynn. Although still in its infancy, the garden features raised beds, a formal rose garden and a central water feature. The winding path is framed by standard roses, borders and lawns.

Hidden away, Slade garden is an unexpected jewel to discover next to the sea with views overlooking the Bristol Channel. The garden tumbles down a valley protected by a belt of woodland. In front of the house are delightful formal areas a rose and clematis pergola and herbaceous borders. From terraced lawns great sweeps of grass stretch down the hill enlivened by spring bulbs and fritillaries.

This family friendly garden started from a blank canvas eight years ago, initially laid to lawn. Raised vegetable beds were installed and a 75m natural hedge planted along the side boundary to encourage wildlife. This was supplemented with fruit trees, flower and herb borders to attract insects. The lawn provides a clearing to the surrounding forestry attracting a variety of birds.
