On an isolated stretch of the upper River Test, gardens have been built incrementally over 30 yrs with bulbs, herbaceous and Mediterranean borders, magnolia, irises, and tree peonies, along with summer and autumn borders. A traditional orchard and two small arboretums, one specialising in Japanese planting. The garden stretches into the landscape and forms part of a renaturing project. Binsted Place, a C17 farmhouse with attractive local stone outbuildings, is surrounded by a series of garden rooms covering approx 1½ acres, enclosed by yew hedges and old walls. Endhouse is a tranquil urban oasis of linked gardens, inc a secret rose garden. It has won Southampton’s Best Private Garden award six times and features statuary, studio ceramics, specimen palms, tree ferns, and acers. This 14 acre spring woodland garden was laid out in 1893. An embarkation point for D-Day, the lighthouse in the garden now marks the entrance to the Beaulieu River with stunning views. Hidden behind a C16 thatched cottage is an enticing 1½ acre garden. Colourful pots welcome you onto the terrace and two call ducks on the pond. Mature beds burst with cottage garden plants and shrubs. Raised beds are filled with vegetables. Walk through the newly built pergola covered in roses and clematis to a gypsy caravan which sits in a peaceful area of shrub roses and mature specimen trees. Trout Cottage is a small walled garden off the High St. It is quite low maintenance with no lawn, interesting planting and small trees. I hope it will inspire those with small spaces and little time to achieve tranquillity and beauty. There are seating areas, a small raised pond and a variety of climbing roses. A small garden (12 metres by 12 metres) is full of interest and ideas, showing what can be achieved in a small space. The borders feature mature trees and shrubs underplanted with perennials, while half-hardy plants such as hedychium and annuals add to the overall effect. A gravel area has replaced the lawn, making room for a different range of plants. The borders were updated this autumn with plants suited to hot weather. Suburban water garden. Enjoy spring colour from azaleas, rhododendrons and bulbs, then summer colour from perennials, water lilies and tropical plants. A lawn meanders between informal beds and ponds, and bridges lead to a tranquil pergola seating area overlooking a wildlife pond. A large garden of 66 acres with beautiful vista, extensive woodlands, and fine avenues of wellingtonias.
