The prison has 150 acres of farm and grounds maintained by prisoners learning horticultural and agricultural skills. The site has gardens with herbaceous borders, lawns, heritage orchard, allotments, greenhouses, wildflower meadow, wellness garden, wildlife and fish ponds and extensive woodland. Elizabeth Gaskell’s garden opened in 2014 after extensive research and restoration work and is now an urban oasis one mile from the city centre. With a layout based on an 1850s map volunteers have recreated the garden using period plants and those referenced in Elizabeth Gaskell’s writings. The garden has twice received the Britain in Bloom Gold award. Opens Saturday 13th June.
The group consists of 3 diverse suburban gardens in adjoining streets in Eccles. 35 Ellesmere Road is a cottage style garden with walkways, palisade, greenhouse and raised beds with vegetables and herbs. Lawns with box hedges. Mature fruit and other trees. At 11 Westminster Road there is a pretty front garden with topiary chickens, well-stocked with perennials, mature trees, and box hedging. The garden is divided by a trellis and rose arch which separates the flower beds and lawn from the fruit growing area, and there are a large number of fuchsias grown in pots. Finally at 20 Stafford Road the garden features mature trees and shrubs alongside many recent additions. An ongoing project involves upcycling items the garden owners find interesting. The owners like to put bold colours and statements in wherever they can to enable colour year-round, a large wildlife pond has been added and a pergola with climbing plants. Opens Saturday 13th June.

A group of contrasting gardens spaced across an attractive award-winning village with a conservation area. Hazel Cottage’s former Victorian orchard plot has evolved into a series of themed spaces while the adjoining land has a natural pond, meadow and developing native woodland. Owl Barn has herbaceous borders filled with cottage garden and hardy plants, a productive kitchen garden with fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. There are two ponds with water features and secluded seating areas. Palatine is a garden of 3 contrasting spaces started in 2019 around a modern bungalow to attract wildlife and give year-round interest. In the same cul-de-sac, Laneside is still a work in progress. The garden is on 3 sides of the bungalow, with mature shrubs and trees, a rose garden, perennials and a small fruit growing area. Also an inherited woodland walk which is a current project. An elegant garden in the Georgian quarter joins the range of gardens from the grand Georgian terraces, to the restored Victorian streets. They include Granby Winter Garden and the back alley garden recently featured on Gardeners’ World. The winter garden was created out of derelict houses, in an area being beautifully regenerated thanks to the efforts of local people. They join the unusual classically designed Spanish garden of St Philip Neri church. El Jardin de la Nuestra Senora was created on a bomb site after WW2. The church’s exquisite Byzantine interior, designed by PS Gilby, will also be open. In contrast to the Georgian Quarter classicism are the vibrant Grapes Community Food Garden and Squash Cafe garden in Windsor Street, plus the Wellbeing garden of the Liverpool Pakistan Association. It is a fascinating group, all within the historic heart of Liverpool, with many architecturally important buildings including Liverpool’s Anglican cathedral, the largest cathedral in Europe. Dyneley garden was designed by the influential English garden designer James Russell in the 1960s. The garden has evolved to include influences from the Italian gardens of ‘Ninfa’ and has stunning views to the wider landscape. Opens Saturday 20th and Saturday 27th June.

Work on our ‘Sanctuary’ garden began in 2025, thanks to the generosity of the National Garden Scheme’s Garden for Health funding programme. This special garden, with subtle planting will provide a space for comfort and reflection. Nestled high on the side of Longridge Fell, with beautiful long-reaching views across the Ribble valley, the gardens surround the old farmhouse and buildings. The gardens are ever evolving and inc an acre of perennial wildflower meadows, wildlife ponds, woodland areas and cottage gardens. There are plentiful areas to sit and take in the views. The garden is set in the historic Turton Tower grounds and was originally the kitchen garden in Victorian times. A group of volunteers have restored and created the garden over the last 16 yrs. The garden today consists of raised vegetable beds and soft fruit areas but most of the garden is divided into smaller feature gardens. Turton Tower’s history is reflected in its Tudor and Victorian beds. More contemporary gardens are The White Garden and Japanese Garden. There are also 2 long herbaceous borders with a large variety of perennials. We have an interesting variety of ferns and shade loving plants in our stumperies. Our new garden is a wildlife garden and pond surrounding the ruined Bothy. Plants, cards and jam will be for sale. Opens Saturday 27th June.

Greenhouses, ponds and rockery. 7 Pinewood Avenue is a garden with shrubs, perennials, wildlife pond, wildflower area, raised beds for cut flowers and vegetables. The garden attracts lots of birds. Bridge Inn Community Farm is a beautiful 4 acre smallholding with plants, flowers, trees and ponds and views looking out over the countryside. The stroll garden leads down to the tea house garden. The planting and the meandering pathways blend together to create a tranquil meditative garden in which to relax. The park was originally the site of a mill long since demolished. The overgrown site was reclaimed by local residents during lock down to create a community park. Many plants, shrubs and trees were donated by friends and neighbours, transforming the area into a quiet tranquil wildlife haven. We have bees and an allotment where plants are grown for the park and sold to raise funds for the park. Opens with Arevinti on Sunday 28th June.
