A group of contrasting gardens spaced across an attractive award-winning village with a conservation area. Hazel Cottage’s former Victorian orchard plot has evolved into a series of themed spaces while the adjoining land has a natural pond, meadow and developing native woodland. Owl Barn has herbaceous borders filled with cottage garden and hardy plants, a productive kitchen garden with fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. There are two ponds with water features and secluded seating areas. Palatine is a garden of 3 contrasting spaces started in 2019 around a modern bungalow to attract wildlife and give year-round interest. In the same cul-de-sac, Laneside is still a work in progress. The garden is on 3 sides of the bungalow, with mature shrubs and trees, a rose garden, perennials and a small fruit growing area. Also an inherited woodland walk which is a current project. Along the River Darwen, through the tiny secret grotto, past the suspension bridge and view of the fairytale tower, visitors can stroll past folly, sculptures, lily pond, and lawns, enjoy the naturally planted flower beds, then enter the secret garden and through it the pathways of the wooded hillside beyond. They range in size and design from a walled garden featuring tender perennials to a mature tranquil ever evolving garden. Three new gardens provide good examples of cottage gardening, entertaining spaces and a developing garden full of surprises.
