NEW and returning Welsh gardens to explore in 2026

From rolling hills and valleys to coastal retreats and city secrets National Garden Scheme gardens across Wales offer a diverse and magical portfolio of gardens to explore. With over 300 gardens opening in 2026 there are plenty to enjoy.

Returning: The Pant, Gwent
An extraordinary garden set in secluded, spectacular Black Mountains scenery with 25 acres of landscaped woodland, orchard, checkerboard herb garden, walled garden, Islamic garden and green theatre.

NEW: 74 Castle Street, Glamorgan 
A beautifully landscaped terraced garden creating a classical and elegant atmosphere. The garden is divided into two sections; the upper section, connected to the Grade II listed house, the oldest part of the garden. The second section is at a lower level; with several ornate statues, stone urns and planters, here, the garden was created from scratch. Stunning views over the River Loughor.

Returning after 31 years: Hafod Garegog, Caernarfon, Gwynedd 
One acre mature garden with three seasons of interest bordering the Nanmor river and national nature reserve. Garden surrounds the part C17 house, rebuilt in 1622 from the C14 home of the poet Rhys Goch Eryri, whose poetry survives. Upper and lower water gardens, walled and pleasure gardens with beautiful views of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Cnicht, Moel Hebog and Eryri (Snowdonia).

NEW: Old Place, Llantwit Major, South Glamorgan 
Mature garden behind a 500 year old cottage. Distinct areas are separated by old walls and steps. At entrance level is a courtyard with climbers, pots and seating, leading to a circular lawn surrounded by mixed herbaceous borders. Steps lead up to an old apple tree with shrubs and cottage herbaceous planting. Beyond is a formal pond, with further borders leading to fields with trees and space.

Returning Fairdene Gallery Garden, Montgomery, Powys
A private garden and gallery evolved over 20 years designed and planted by its artist owner and reflects her idiosyncratic style, love of co-ordinated colour, enthusiasm for rock placement, and joy in designing extraordinary metalwork. A limited number of tickets have been made available for these two special one-day events kindly hosted by Frieda Hughes. Introductory talk by Frieda on her garden and art followed by tour of garden and gallery.

Returning: Aber Artro Hall, Gwynedd
Six acres of beautiful gardens surrounding the Arts and Crafts mansion built in 1910 by C. E. Bateman. Hillside rock and wild gardens lead to ancient woodland, and lawns with ponds, fountains and managed flower beds lead to two magnificent terraces. Large kitchen garden with huge fruit pergola, orchard and peach-house, adjoin the separate Italian and Japanese gardens, with a lovely riverside walk.

NEW: Upper Bwlch Farm, Powys (lead photo)
A small cottage garden on a working farm, created and featured on BBC Garden Rescue and designed by Charlie Dimmock. The team turned Ian and Ruth’s rural plot into a country garden which was created in 2019 over 2 days with a revisit filmed in 2024.

A much loved and mature garden, that has been created over a 20 year period. NEW: 107 Cyncoed Road, Cardiff
A spacious garden, with spring interest at the front camellias, azaleas and hellebores. The back garden is approached through a Japanese walkway, leading to a series of landscaped borders, inc herbaceous perennials, acers, a roped rose colonnade, and pond planting. A round bed containing a showstopper weeping pear with a heuchera clock. Overlooked by a sun terrace showcasing begonias.

The Laundry is a large, private garden near Denbigh, North Wales, developed by Tom and Jenny Williams since 2009. It includes a terraced courtyard garden surrounded by old stone walls, enclosing cottage style planting and formal hedging. The old kitchen walled garden has also been incorporating into the whole garden plan. Features include, a woodland walk, roses, pleached limes, peonies and herbaceous planting.

NEW: Yew Tree Cottage, Bridgend 
The main garden has been designed with colourful herbaceous borders, unusual shrubs and climbing plants. There is a large pond with bog and marginal planting. Winding gravel paths direct you to a hidden seated area. Decking areas are full of colourful salvias, dahlias and other tender perennials. A separate additional garden has winding grass paths through mixed herbaceous and shrub planting.

NEW: Yscirfechan, Brecon, Powys
A unique opportunity to enjoy a sneak peek behind the scenes of a working cut flower farm. River Meadow Flower Farm extends to over an acre, encompassing cut flower beds, herbaceous borders and PYO beds. Nestled in the peaceful Yscir Valley and flanked by the River Yscir, this is a secluded flower-filled haven.

NEW: Troed y Rhiw, Ceredigion 
A charming, semi wild garden, having been reclaimed from the brambles over the last four years. Still very much a work in progress with several areas inc a large nature pond and riverside setting. Wander through woodland gardens, orchard and wildflower meadow. There are herbaceous borders, new tree and shrub plantings, vegetable beds and polytunnel all tucked away in a Welsh valley.

NEW: Caelydan Bungalow, Newtown, Powys 
A ⅓ acre garden at 1000ft encouraging wildlife and diversity. Started in 2020 from grazing land, discover many features inc perennial beds, pond and gazebo, raised vegetable beds and bog garden. Wander through a heritage orchard and wildflower meadow with many native species. Take a seat to soak up the views (Cadair Idris)– the garden is evolving and adapting as our own gardening skills develop.

NEW: Craig Ogwen, Bethesda, Gwynedd 
Small, impactful garden- home to RHS Chelsea gold medal winning garden designer Dan Bristow. Featuring bold planting with rare and unusual species informed by his many plant hunting travels. Innovative bespoke landscaping elements abound, inc a ‘floating’ cast bench nestled into the bedrock. The garden is set against a rushing river. Beyond lies ancient woodland, visually framing the garden.

NEW: Grangetown Kitchen Garden, Cardiff
Thriving in the mild climate of Cardiff’s bay area, the garden encompasses an orchard, raised as well as no-dig beds, a polytunnel and wildlife areas. Embedded in the local multicultural community, a wide array of vegetables and fruits grow. Expect pumpkins, hardy kiwi, lemongrass, tulsi, banana plants and sunflowers, amongst many others. The garden promotes wellbeing and sustainable living.

NEW: Brynteg, Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire
A stunning, beautifully presented five acre garden with beds, wide lawns and many unusual trees. Collections of peonies, clematis, hostas, lilliums etc; wind your way along paths bordered by mass planted beds and through specimen trees, stumpery, newly planted rose bed and avenue of acers. Further beds around house inc pond, pots, greenhouse, vegetable and fruit cages.

NEW: Rhos Eithin, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion
 
A new garden started in 2020 which features very little hard landscaping, intentionally soft edges, and has an ethos of treading lightly to enhance ecological value. The owner also has a penchant for growing unusual and interesting woody shrubs and trees. The garden is designed to blend defined spaces for entertaining and relaxing with pathways that encourage visitors to wander.

NEW: Penymynydd, Ruthin, Clwyd 
Set in about an acre of ground is a new garden and work in progress. Divided into small areas around a limestone outcrop the garden has herbaceous borders, water features, seating areas, mature trees, and a woodland walk. The garden is accessible but there are steps and slopes. The woodland path is uneven. Special features inc limestone ridges, tree carving, and a bridged water flow.

EW: Inn Farm, Gwent
Enclosed flower garden is a lush mix of modern and traditional perennials interspersed with clipped evergreens. Specialities inc ferns, succulents and South African plants. Simple green terraces retained by sculpted hedges offer valley and mountain views. A scented garden of shrubs, bulbs and meadow grass adjoins a small orchard. A steep 15 acre, riverside oak woodland is maintained for its carpet of mosses.
