Three large country gardens a short walk from each other. Tom and Sue Stuart-Smith’s garden at The Barn has an enclosed courtyard with tanks of water, herbaceous perennials and shrubs tolerant of generally dry conditions. To the north there are views over the five acre wildflower meadow. The West Garden is a series of different gardens overflowing with bulbs, herbaceous perennials, and shrubs. There is also an exotic prairie planted from seed in 2011. The Plant Library is a collection of over 1000 herbaceous plants first planted in 2021. Next door at Serge Hill, there is a lovely walled garden with a large Foster and Pearson greenhouse, orderly rows of vegetables, and disorderly self-seeded annuals and perennials. Inspired by the Old Rectory’s C18 history and religious setting, the main garden is divided into six areas: kitchen garden, glasshouse and flower garden, woodland menagerie, pleasure garden, park, and orchard. Elements of C18 design such as formal structures, parterres, topiary, long walks, occasional seating areas and traditional craft work have been introduced, but with a distinctly C21 twist through the inclusion of living walls, modern materials and features, new planting methods and abstract installations. The Walled Garden at Knepp has been transformed into a garden for biodiversity. With designers Tom Stuart-Smith and James Hitchmough, we have applied some of the principles we’ve learned from rewilding the wider landscape to this small, confined space to create a mosaic of dynamic habitats for wildlife. The croquet lawn is now a riot of humps and hollows, hosting almost 1000 species of plants. Opens Saturday 6th June.

Spanning 3½ acres, it features formal topiary, seasonal borders, a contemporary water sculpture, an Italianate gazebo, specimen and mature trees, a Japanese garden with waterfall and tea house, a large copse with a stream, a stumpery and treehouse, and a kitchen garden with fruit trees. The Orchards is a new garden, planted in autumn 2023 following the completion of a new build on site. At the front, there is soft prairie style planting, while around the back you will find a rambling, informal cottage garden with a cutting bed, soft fruit, vegetables, and a small natural pond. The garden enjoys stunning views of the South Downs. Woodlands is a quiet location at the foot of the South Downs, with lovely views and easy access for walking. East, south, and west facing garden with beautiful herbaceous perennials, alliums, shrubs, roses, and grasses set against lawn, gravel, and decking. Explore Richmond Castle’s dramatic Contemporary Heritage Garden, designed in 2000 by Neil Swanson.
