The historic gardens of Winchester College inc a traditional college ‘quad’, a quiet sitting garden for the old College sick house; the tranquil gardens of the College’s war memorial, and the Warden’s Garden with its herbaceous borders, woodland, and private section of one of the most famous chalk streams in the world. To celebrate our 175th Anniversary, Bradfield College is proud to open its gardens for the NGS. Set in the Pang Valley, the beautifully tended grounds are surrounded by brick and flint buildings dating from 1850. Features inc Quad and Sunken Gardens, and a rare chance to view inside the College’s Greek Theatre and St Andrew’s Church, now converted into a stunning Study Centre. Please note that teas will be served in the Stunt Pavilion approx 400 metres from the gardens up a slight hill. Opens Sunday 1st June.
Perhaps the only school in England with a working kitchen garden growing quantities of seasonal vegetables, fruit and flowers for the table. The rolling lawns host sports matches, gymnastics, dance and plays while ancient cedars look on. The stable clock chimes on the hour and the chapel presides over it all. This special event takes place in the Warden’s private garden which isn’t open to members of the public; It is an Oxford secret. The event will begin with Tea in the Warden’s garden followed by a short lecture on New College. After this, visitors are given a private tour of the College and garden from The Warden, Miles Young. The College gardens, which have been developed and curated for by a distinguished series of Garden Fellows over the generations, most recently by Robin Lane-Fox. A highlight of the garden is the long herbaceous border, set against the medieval City wall. Opens Monday 16th June, pre-booking essential.

Rond Pont entrance leads to a small woodland walk, herbaceous and sub-tropical borders, rose pergola, kitchen/allotment garden and orchard. The Provost’s Garden opens with kind permission, offering a rare glimpse of an Arts and Crafts design. Chance to view the new wildflower meadow created on the former Great Lawn. The children grow all manner of flowers and vegetables from seed, learning how plants grow and what they need to survive. They have also discovered how they taste through harvesting and cooking their produce in weekly cookery sessions at school. Our aim now is for the garden to be a place that is used every day for lessons as well as play (and gardening!) and that the children continue to significantly contribute to how their space evolves. We have almost 1000 different plants connected with the role of plants in medicine today and in the past. These inc plants named after physicians, plants which make modern medicines and those with long standing traditional uses. There are plants used in medical traditions from all the continents of the world and plants from the College’s own Pharmacopoeia of 1618. Opens Monday 7th July.
In front of and behind Tonbridge School you will find five gardens that you can visit. These are: The Boars Head, The Garden of Remembrance, Smythe Library Garden, Skinners Library Garden, and the Barton Science Centre Garden. We hope the Chapel will be open for visits. Opens Wednesday 9th July.
10 original Edwardian gardens linked to central wild woodland water garden focused on Bin Brook, with small lake at heart of site, giving a feeling of park and informal woodland, while keeping the sense of older more formal gardens beyond. Mature stately trees frame central wide lawn running down to the lake. Much original planting is still intact. More recent planting inc bulbs and commemorative trees. No picnics. Mixed herbaceous perennials/shrub borders, with mature trees and lawns and gravel border situated in the semi rural setting of the High Peak inc a Grade II listed building with four themed quads. The school was awarded highly commended in the School Garden 2019 RHS Tatton Show and won the Best High School Garden and the People’s Choice Award. Opens Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July.

Lincoln is one the University of Oxford’s oldest colleges, founded in 1427. The gardens offer formal lawns, mixed borders in traditional and contemporary styles, container displays, climbing plants and mature trees. The gardens are laid out in the classic quadrangle style, where each passageway leads into a different ‘room’, creating a uniquely varied horticultural and architectural experience. Opens Sunday 3rd August.
Historic, listed Oxford College gardens, on a site dating back to C13. Open again after several years of restoration work, with a new 120 metre border by garden designer Chris Beardshaw and other new areas by Head Gardener Kate Burtonwood. The park-like front quadrangle has mature specimen trees inc Catalpa and Cedrus. Formal courtyards house seasonal pot displays. New planting areas were created in the Woodland and Library Quad in 2021 following extensive redevelopment of college buildings. The private walled gardens – the President’s Garden and Fellows’ Garden – will be open for viewing. Please note that this opening is cashless payments only. Opens Sunday 3rd August.
The former private garden of Robert Holford, founder of Westonbirt Arboretum, the gardens and parkland cover 28 acres. Formal Victorian gardens inc walled Italian garden now restored with early herbaceous borders and exotic border. Rustic walks, lake, statuary and grotto. Rare, exotic trees and shrubs. Formerly a small Georgian country estate, now a co-educational preparatory school. Grade II listed house (not open). Mature parkland with specimen trees. Historical features inc ice house and a recently restored walled kitchen garden with flower borders, fruit and children’s vegetable plots. There is also a lake, woodland walks, rhododendrons, azaleas and acers. Opens Saturday 27th September.
