By Arrangement Gardens in West Sussex

If you’re looking to organise a private visit to a garden, whether it be for a local group or for friends and family, a By Arrangement can provide something a little different. In West Sussex there’s a range of gardens available for private By Arrangement visits, find out more below.

Shepherds Cottage, Stoughton

A compact terraced garden using the borrowed landscape of Kingley Vale in the South Downs. The south facing flint stone cottage (not open) is surrounded by a Purbeck stone terrace and numerous individually planted and styled seating areas. Opens for By Arrangement visits from May to August for groups of between 10 and 30.

The Shrubbery, Barnham

¼ acre plot with mature trees, shrubs, wildflower lawn, roses, agapanthus and dahlias in front garden leading to walled back garden of mixed colourful borders, soft fruit, sculpture and large collection of hostas. Many colourful pots, wall baskets and greenhouse. Ideas and points of interest throughout. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 10th June to 15th June for groups of between 6 and 20.

Tuppenny Barn, Southbourne

An iconic, organic smallholding used as an outdoor classroom to teach children about the environment, sustainability and healthy food. 2½ acres packed with a wildlife pond, orchard with heritage top fruit varieties, two solar polytunnels, fruit cages, and raised vegetables, herbs and cut flower garden. Willow provides natural arches and wind breaks. Bug hotel and beehives support vital pollinators. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 16th January to 7th October for groups of between 12 and 30.

Whitehanger, Haslemere

Set in 6 acres on the edge of the South Downs National Park surrounded by NT woodland, this rural garden was started in 2012 when a new Huf house (not open) was built on a derelict site. Now there are lawned areas with beds of perennials, a serenity pool with Koi carp, a wildflower meadow, a Japanese garden, a sculpture garden, a woodland walk, a large rockery and an exotic walled garden. Opens for By Arrangement visits from 10 June to 9 September for groups of between 8 and 35.
