Easy air dry clay Christmas decorations
These easy to make Christmas decorations can be customised with family names or festive sayings and are great fun to make on your own or with the family. Perfect for hanging on the tree, or adding as a name tag on your gifts or your Christmas table settings they’re good value too. We bought 1kg of clay – which will make at least 40 decorations depending on size – from a leading online craft store for £2.
What you need:
- 1 pack of air drying white clay
- Cookie cutters
- Rolling pin
- Letter stamps (or be bold and do it by hand)
- Cocktail stick
- Sandpaper
- Ribbon or festive string
- Glitter and metallic paint (optional)
Method
Roll out your clay to about 2-3 mm thickness.
TOP TIP: Putting grease proof paper or cling film on your work surface will stop the clay sticking and make it easier to remove.
Cut out the shape you want with a cookie cutter and stamp or write the wording into the clay. If using letter stamps be careful not to push right through the clay.
Using a cocktail stick create the hole that you will thread the ribbon or string through.
Gently peel the cut-out shape from the surface and place on a cooling rack. Don’t worry if they are a bit rough around the edges – you can sand them gently when they are dry.
It takes about 2 – 3 days to dry properly.
Once dry, sand off the rough edges and thread with ribbon or string.
TOP TIP: for a glitzier finish roll glitter into your clay or go round the edges with metallic paint. You can even paint the words too. For a botanical twist, try printing some leaf patterns into your shape.
