A small plot of inter-connected gardens philosophically based on Ancient Chinese pleasure gardens but with English naturalistic style of planting and artefacts. A narrow entrance from the High Street leads through a small entrance garden with a flint area to a gravel courtyard with beds of white flowers and ferns. The main part of the garden, in total 1.3 acres, is grass edged with flowerbeds and divided into an open area near the house, a wooded middle section and an orchard with fruit trees, as well as another open region at the bottom with an unmown wildflower meadow and a wildlife pond. Warmed and sheltered by the medieval walls of a C14 house (the oldest in Burwell) the garden is richly diverse in format and planting. There are ‘theatres’ (auricula, pinks), hints of Snowdonia, the Mediterranean, and a French potager, Anglesey Abbey in the snowdrop season and much else. Artist and designer Jeni Cairns has been creating a garden for enjoyment and nature over the past 13 yrs, It was previously the home of her grandparents for 60 yrs. Jeni is passionate about plants and learning as much as possible through experimentation and creativity. She takes inspiration from her garden to create her sculptures and decorative metal work. The garden surrounds a C16th grade II listed thatched cottage. It is to a good extent walled and split into the front and back. All told, the site is about ⅓rd of an acre. The garden has over 50 Japanese Acers, a magnificent walnut tree, and mature silver birch.
