Enjoyed by six generations of same family over 160 years. Many interesting mature trees, young fruit trees, rhododendrons, ponds, numerous roses and standards, and much else of interest, even in the wilder areas. Lawn used for tennis in last century, now smaller and left unmown in parts, wildflowers encouraged. We live and let live, encourage all wildlife, try to garden organically.

Cefn Cribwr is an old mining village atop a ridge with views of Swansea to the west, Somerset to the south and home to Bedford Park and the Cefn Cribwr Iron Works. The village hall is at the centre with teas, cakes and plants for sale. The allotments are to be found behind the hall. Children, art and relaxation are just some of the themes to be found in the gardens besides the flower beds and vegetables. There are also water features, fish ponds, wildlife ponds, summerhouses and hens adding to the diverse mix in the village. Themed colour borders, roses, greenhouses, recycling, composting and much more. The Coal Tip Garden is a small personal space created to help us relax. Its main character is enclosure. It is not a flowery garden but is formed out of shrubs and trees- a tapestry with niches being cut in order to place sculpture and to produce a visual rhythm. A key philosophy is using native perennials and repetitive planting leading the eye through the space to the studio.
While it’s the garden you come to view, your first instinct will be to stop and admire the panoramic views over the countryside. The gardens are laid out for all seasons, bulbs and herbaceous in shrub borders. Water features with cascades down to a pond, surrounded by mixed borders and trees, offering shade. Each quite different, they combine some of the best characteristics of design and planting for modern town gardens as well as cottage gardens. Each has its own forte: Waunwyllt’s ½ acre is divided into garden rooms and 28 Maes y Nant is where cottage garden planting reigns.

On the outskirts of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). From the unassuming façade you enter into a secluded small front garden with a distinctive Balinese style. Densely planted with mature trees, palms and a vast array of lush plants, it hosts a plethora of Balinese features alongside a tropical hut and pond. This garden has been lovingly created using upcycled items and jungle style planting.

Rose Cottage is an old fashioned Welsh cottage garden with jumbled flower beds, a herb yard and lots of fruit and vegetables. We borrow ideas from permaculture, no-dig and companion planting but in many ways- apart from a lovely big polytunnel which allows year-round growing. The garden at Rose Cottage is the same now as it has always been: simple, sustainable, pretty and productive.

From terraced lawns great sweeps of grass stretch down the hill enlivened by snowdrops, hellebores and cyclamen.In front of the house are delightful formal areas a rose and clematis pergola and herbaceous borders.

This family friendly garden started from a blank canvas nine years ago, initially laid to lawn. Raised vegetable beds were installed and a 75m natural hedge planted along the side boundary to encourage wildlife. This was supplemented with fruit trees, flower and herb borders to attract insects. Uplands has an informal and multi-textured look within a cottage garden design. The front garden has flower, vegetables and fruit beds. The back was planted in 2019 and was once all grass. There are four main herbaceous borders, fruit trees, ornamental grasses, ferns, shrubs and roses, with many places to relax and enjoy the garden.
