Recently replanted, the garden features colour-themed mixed borders of perennials and annuals, inc flowers for cutting, eating, and scent. Planted with an artist’s eye for contrast and complementary colours. Vibrant late summer flower beds filled with salvias, eryngiums, agapanthus, grasses, and lilies that attract bees and butterflies. A broad lawn is surrounded by borders containing maples, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and mature trees, interspersed with ferns and grasses. A ⅓ acre walled garden surrounding a C16–C18 cottage (not open) in Angmering Conservation Area. Formal areas, perennial borders and topiary create structure, with splendid holm oak and bay, espalier apple trees and a small kitchen garden. Our unconventional garden is designed to encourage maximum wildlife, featuring a knapweed and hogweed meadow on clay that attracts clouds of butterflies, along with two small ponds and plenty of seating. This garden behind a 1937 semi plays host to a venerable Bramley. Other trees, such as Tibetan birch and Photinia’Red Robin’, were chosen for their colour, which is carried through the seasons by tulips, Geum, Alstroemeria, dahlias, cannas, roses, and penstemon. Cotinus and Heuchera enrich the palette. Hard landscaping and a potting shed, added in 2022, helped to pull the plant collection into a cohesive design. Developed from rough grass in 2020, this exuberant gravel garden was created by its artist owner. Contrasting foliage, less common plants, and effervescent flowers linger long. Many plants self-seed, increasing a natural look. This west facing town garden is loosely divided into three sections, with a fine greenhouse housing fascinating cacti and succulents. A lush rainforest/jungle garden, which we have planted from scratch over the past 12 yrs. Both front and rear gardens contain a mass of palms, bananas, bamboos, and all manner of spiky, luxuriant foliage. Normal rules are not followed! Surreal sculptures and new features to delight. A south facing garden, just 300 metres from the sea. An exotic garden giving a tropical, jungle feel. Gravel paths with stepping stones are interspersed with planting to soften the journey. Large leaved plants, statues, seating, a 12ft giraffe, an Indonesian elephant, and a well-stocked aviary are amongst the surprises that await as you amble through the garden. A Georgian village house (not open) next to a C12 church, with a beautiful, mature ¾ acre English country garden. The garden comprises a walled area laid out as a series of rooms with well-stocked flower beds, two rare ginkgo trees, and yew topiary. This leads to an informal garden with vegetable, herb, and fruit areas, pleached limes, and a lawn shaded by a copper beech tree. Opens Thursday 23rd and Sunday 26th July with Thakeham Place Farm.
Set in the middle of a working dairy farm, the garden has evolved over the last 35 yrs. Taking advantage of its sunny position on free draining greensand, the borders are full of sun loving plants and grasses with a more formal area surrounding the farmhouse (not open). In 2024 a new natural pond was created in the wilder area of the garden to encourage wildlife. Opens Thursday 23rd and Sunday 26th July with Cumberland House.

Explore the Mediterranean lake garden and surrounding bankside walk tended by Head Gardener Colin and his apprentices. Italian cypress, olives, pines, hardy palms, spiky plants, and bamboo grove. The guided tour inc the large Acer house, the greenhouse of exciting and rare exotics, and a specialist Niwaki Production Zone. Prepare to enter exotica. The best cake in Sussex, so we hear.
